Morgan Stanley CEO Ted Pick is reportedly exploring the possibility of the banking giant venturing further into the world of digital assets. In a recent report by CNBC, Pick expressed the firm’s willingness to collaborate with US regulators to navigate the regulatory landscape surrounding crypto offerings.
At the World Economic Forum, Pick emphasized the importance of compliance for a highly regulated financial institution like Morgan Stanley. He stated, “For us, the equation is really [about] whether we, as a highly regulated financial institution, can act as transactors. We’ll be working with Treasury and the other regulators to figure out how we can offer that in a safe way.”
Under the Biden Administration, banks have faced restrictions on physically owning Bitcoin, with the option to only engage in derivatives. However, there is growing interest among banking institutions in embracing crypto assets. CEOs of other major banks, such as Goldman Sachs and Bank of America, have also expressed their desire to explore opportunities in the digital asset space.
Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan revealed that the firm is eagerly awaiting regulatory clarity to fully embrace crypto assets and blockchain technology. He mentioned, “If the rules come in and make it a real thing that you can actually do business with, you’ll find that the banking system will come in hard. We have hundreds of patents on blockchain already, we know how to enter the field.”
The discussion around banks getting involved in the crypto industry has raised concerns about regulatory compliance. Former SEC chief John Reed Stark warned that promoting Bitcoin-based exchange-traded funds (ETFs) could lead to intense scrutiny from regulatory bodies like the SEC and FINRA.
