Instead of manually moving assets and interacting with different networks, users can simply declare their intent, and the solvers will take care of the rest.
The Open Intents Framework (OIF) is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at standardizing and simplifying cross-chain transactions within the Ethereum ecosystem. Developed by contributors from the Ethereum Foundation, Hyperlane, and Bootnode, OIF provides a modular, permissionless system for intent-based execution. By enabling users to specify their desired outcomes rather than manually executing transactions across multiple L2 networks, OIF aims to enhance cross-chain interoperability.
One of the key features of OIF is its support for multiple settlement mechanisms, allowing developers to choose execution methods that best suit their use cases. These mechanisms include RRC-7755 from Base and Hashi Alliance, Espresso Systems’ confirmation layer, Optimism’s Superchain native interoperability, and Arbitrum’s broadcast standard. This diversity in settlement methods enables builders to experiment with different approaches while maintaining interoperability.
At the heart of OIF lies ERC-7683, a standard developed by Across and Uniswap Labs to create a unified structure for expressing and executing intents across Ethereum’s expanding ecosystem. ERC-7683 acts as a shared language that ensures compatibility across solvers, users, and applications, eliminating fragmentation in the multichain space.
The adoption of OIF is expected to drive the next phase of interoperability in the Ethereum ecosystem, making intent-based execution a core component. With support from major L2 networks and infrastructure providers, OIF represents a coordinated effort to unify Ethereum’s multichain environment, similar to the W3 Alliance. This initiative benefits developers, networks, users, and solvers alike, streamlining operations and dramatically improving efficiency in cross-chain transactions.
