Over 170 Android Apps Scam Cryptocurrency Enthusiasts
Introduction
Recently, security researchers uncovered a disturbing trend in the world of cryptocurrency – over 170 Android apps have been identified as scams, targeting unsuspecting enthusiasts and defrauding them of their hard-earned money.
Details of the Scam
According to Lookout Threat Lab, a total of 25 of these fraudulent apps were even found on the official Google Play marketplace. They were divided into two groups known as BitScam and CloudScam, both utilizing similar business models, coding, and design to lure users into their trap.
These scam apps promise users access to cryptocurrency mining services, taking advantage of the recent surge in digital currency valuations and the growing interest from individuals looking to capitalize on this trend. Victims were enticed to pay for the initial app download and subsequent ‘virtual hardware’ or ‘subscription upgrades’ that claim to enhance coin mining rates.
The Reality of the Scam
Despite the promises made by these apps, they offer nothing of value to users. Lookout application security researcher Ioannis Gasparis revealed that after logging in, users are presented with a dashboard displaying hash mining rates and ‘earned’ coins. However, further analysis revealed that the displayed hash rate is intentionally low to persuade users to purchase upgrades for faster mining rates.
Gasparis explained, “After examining the code and network traffic, we discovered that the apps show a fictitious coin balance rather than the actual number of coins mined. Users are unable to withdraw coins until their account balance reaches a minimum level, which is unattainable as balances are frequently reset to zero.”
Impact of the Scam
These fraudulent apps have targeted approximately 96,000 victims, resulting in an estimated profit of $350,000 for the scammers. Although Google Play has taken down the offending apps, Lookout cautioned that numerous similar apps are still available on third-party app stores, posing a continued risk to unsuspecting users.
Conclusion
It is crucial for cryptocurrency enthusiasts to remain vigilant and exercise caution when downloading apps related to digital currencies. By staying informed and being aware of potential scams, users can protect themselves from falling victim to such fraudulent schemes.
