The Importance of Digital Assets and US Treasuries in the Global Financial System
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Highlights Potential $2 Trillion Demand for US Treasuries
During a recent Congressional House Committee meeting focusing on the international financial system, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized the role of digital assets in creating a significant demand for US Treasuries. Bessent believes that the United States should lead the way in embracing digital assets and implementing robust market structures to ensure best practices are adopted globally.
“We believe that the United States should be the premier destination for digital assets, and, as members of this committee and the Senate are attempting to do, create good market structure around that so that US best practices are used around the world.”
Bessent also pointed out that the rise of digital assets, particularly in the form of cryptocurrencies, could potentially lead to a substantial increase in demand for US government securities.
“Digital assets are an important source of innovation that can drive usage of the US dollar around the world, as with stablecoin legislation. There is speculation that there may be up to $2 trillion of demand over the next few years for US government securities from digital assets.”
The Impact of Bitcoin on US Treasuries Demand
Economist Luke Gromen recently highlighted the influence of Bitcoin on the demand for US Treasuries. Gromen explained that a bull market in Bitcoin typically leads to increased demand for dollar-pegged cryptocurrencies like stablecoins.
Stablecoin issuers such as Tether and Circle rely heavily on Treasury bills to back their coins on a 1:1 basis. Tether, for example, has invested over $94.47 billion in T-bills to support its USDT stablecoin. Circle, on the other hand, holds $22.047 billion worth of T-bills to back its USDC stablecoin.
Legislation such as the STABLE Act of 2025 and the GENIUS Act of 2025, currently under consideration in Congress, require stablecoin issuers to invest in T-bills and other real-world assets to ensure the stability of their coins.
