A recent court ruling in Brussels has resulted in the sentencing of three individuals to 12 years in prison for the kidnapping of the wife of Belgian crypto investor and content creator Stephane Winkel in December 2024. This development sheds light on the increasing number of crypto-related abduction cases across Europe.
The abduction took place on December 20 when Winkel’s wife was forcibly taken from outside their residence and forced into a van with French registration plates. The perpetrators attempted to escape towards the Belgian coast, but Winkel promptly alerted the authorities, leading to a swift interception. Police intercepted the van near Bruges, apprehending the three adults onboard. A minor involved in the incident was referred to juvenile court.
According to reports from local media outlet La Dernière Heure, the kidnappers were found guilty of hostage-taking and attempting to extort cryptocurrency as ransom. During the trial, the defendants claimed they were coerced by unnamed “sponsors” under threat of harm if they refused to comply. However, the court dismissed this defense, categorizing the crime as a premeditated and expertly executed hostage operation.
Despite the convictions of those directly involved in the kidnapping, the investigation into the masterminds behind the crime remains ongoing. Authorities suspect a financial motive behind the abduction, linking it to similar crypto-related kidnapping attempts in Belgium and France.
In addition to serving prison sentences, the convicted individuals were ordered to pay over €1 million in damages to the victim. Following the traumatic incident, Winkel and his wife have relocated for security reasons.
Winkel, a prominent figure in the Belgian crypto community, operates educational platforms such as Crypto Académie and Crypto Sun, along with a YouTube channel boasting nearly 40,000 subscribers. In the aftermath of the kidnapping, Winkel expressed a shift in focus towards prioritizing safety over public exposure, vowing to concentrate on market analysis and user protection in his educational content.
While the recent court ruling signifies progress in the case, authorities continue to pursue leads in identifying the orchestrators of the abduction. Belgian law enforcement is actively investigating an expanding network involved in a series of targeted kidnappings within the European crypto sector.
The incident involving the Winkel family reflects a broader global trend of high-stakes abductions targeting prominent crypto investors. Notable cases include Australian billionaire Tim Heath narrowly escaping a kidnapping attempt in Estonia and instances of abduction and extortion in France.
With the prevalence of such incidents on the rise, the crypto community faces heightened security risks, prompting individuals to exercise caution and implement stringent safety measures to safeguard against potential threats.
