The Ethereum Foundation Releases Roadmap for End-to-End Privacy on Blockchain
The Ethereum Foundation has unveiled a detailed roadmap with the goal of bringing comprehensive privacy features to the world’s second-largest blockchain platform. The foundation’s privacy team will now operate under the name Privacy Stewards of Ethereum (PSE).
Key Focus Areas of the Roadmap
The roadmap, curated by team member Sam Richards, emphasizes the importance of privacy in maintaining Ethereum as a global consensus layer. Richards stated, “Without robust privacy measures, Ethereum runs the risk of becoming a tool for global surveillance rather than global freedom. Building privacy features is crucial to safeguarding the users of Ethereum.”
The roadmap is centered around three main pillars:
- Private Writes: Streamlining the process of private on-chain transactions to be as efficient and cost-effective as public transactions.
- Private Reads: Enabling users to access blockchain data without compromising their identity or intentions.
- Private Proving: Enhancing the speed, privacy, and accessibility of evidence generation and verification.
PlasmaFold and Future Developments
The PSE team is actively working on an experimental Layer-2 design known as PlasmaFold, which is part of a custom script aimed at enabling confidential transfers. The team plans to unveil the first prototype of this feature at Devconnect, the upcoming ETH developer conference in Argentina starting on November 17. Additionally, the team is set to release the “Private Voting 2025” report and explore confidential DeFi solutions that prioritize privacy while adhering to regulatory standards.
Furthermore, the team is developing privacy-focused RPC services for private data retrieval. Recognizing the potential risks associated with standard RPC calls, such as leaking personal information like IP addresses and user account details, PSE has formed a dedicated working group to address these privacy concerns.
The Future of Private Proofs
One standout initiative within the roadmap is the “prove anywhere” project, which aims to simplify and make zero-knowledge proofs (ZK proofs) more accessible and cost-effective for everyday devices. This initiative underscores the commitment of the Ethereum Foundation towards enhancing privacy features on the blockchain.
