Russian authorities have made a significant bust in St. Petersburg, seizing over 2,700 crypto mining rigs from a facility that had been operating since 2018. The operation was uncovered when investigators noticed irregularities in the power consumption of the property, prompting a closer look into the matter.
It was discovered that the operators of the facility had been manipulating meter data using their knowledge of the power grid, allowing them to significantly underreport their actual power usage. This deception enabled them to pay only a fraction of the electricity costs associated with running the crypto mining operation.
The Russian Interior Ministry and police conducted a raid on the facility, capturing the moment on video and sharing it on the ministry’s Telegram channel. The footage shows law enforcement officers breaking into containers housing thousands of operational mining rigs, as well as cooling equipment and transformers used to power the operation.
Three individuals involved in the illegal mining operation were arrested and charged with causing property damage through deception and abuse of trust. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to identify any potential accomplices who may have been involved in the scheme.

In a separate case, police uncovered a network of illegal mining centers in the Donetsk People’s Republic, where operators had connected rigs directly to the grid, bypassing meters and causing significant damages.
