Maurizio Cattelan’s Controversial ‘Comedian’ Artwork Sells for $6.2 Million at Sotheby’s
Maurizio Cattelan, an Italian artist known for his provocative and boundary-pushing work, recently made headlines when his artwork titled “Comedian” sold for an astonishing $6.2 million at Sotheby’s in New York. The piece, which consists of a banana duct-taped to a wall, far exceeded its pre-auction estimate and garnered significant attention from art enthusiasts around the world.
The winning bidder, Justin Sun, a Chinese cryptocurrency entrepreneur, outbid six others to acquire the artwork. In a statement shared on the social networking platform X, Sun expressed his admiration for Cattelan’s work and stated that he hopes it will spark meaningful discussions and become a part of art history. Despite the hefty price tag, Sun added an unexpected twist to his announcement: he plans to eat the banana as part of the unique artistic experience.
It’s worth noting that the actual banana used in the artwork, which was purchased for a mere $0.35 earlier that day, is not included in the sale. Instead, the value of “Comedian” lies in its accompanying certificate and its conceptual nature. The artwork, first unveiled in 2019, quickly went viral and sparked debates about the definition of art. It also includes specific instructions for replacing the banana when it inevitably decays.
Interestingly, this is not the first time the banana in Cattelan’s artwork has been consumed. In 2023, a South Korean art student ate the fruit while the installation was on display at Seoul’s Leeum Museum of Art, prompting the museum to replace it without incident. Similarly, in 2019, a performance artist ate the banana during Art Basel in Miami shortly after it was sold for $120,000, and the artwork was promptly restored with a fresh piece of fruit.
Justin Sun, the founder of the Tron blockchain network, has faced scrutiny in the past, with the US Securities and Exchange Commission accusing him of fraud in 2023. Despite these allegations, Sun remains a controversial figure in the cryptocurrency world.
While the fate of the banana remains uncertain, the legacy of Cattelan’s “Comedian” endures as a thought-provoking statement that challenges traditional notions of art. By pushing boundaries and sparking conversations, the artwork continues to captivate audiences and inspire discussion, solidifying its place in art history.
