However, this serene setting was once plagued by violence and gang warfare, with a staggering homicide rate of 103 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2015. This grim reality left many children orphaned and vulnerable to being recruited by drug cartels, leading them to believe that their only chance at a better life lay in migrating to the United States.
Román Martínez, also known as “Chimbera,” hails from El Zonte and vividly remembers the stark divide in opportunities that existed in his community. Born by the beach, he was destined to be a fisherman like his father and grandfather, while those born in the mountains became farmers. The prevailing narrative was one of limited prospects, pushing the youth towards migration as the only route to a brighter future. Despite the challenges, Román’s infectious smile hints at a deeper story of resilience and transformation that unfolded in El Zonte.
Jorge Valenzuela, another local resident, recalls the harsh realities that forced many to choose between joining gangs or working as private security due to the lack of employment opportunities. Surfing served as a form of solace for Jorge, connecting him with Hirvin as they shared a passion for the sea and a desire to uplift their community. Together, they envisioned leveraging tourism as a catalyst for economic development and job creation in El Zonte.
The turning point came when individuals like Mike, Melissa, Carlos, and Alex arrived in El Zonte, bringing with them a vision of empowering the youth and fostering a sense of hope through education and mentorship. Mike, in particular, emerged as a catalyst for change, transforming from a surfer into a dream maker who instilled a sense of possibility and ambition in the community. Their collective efforts culminated in the world’s first Bitcoin circular economy taking root in El Zonte, symbolizing a paradigm shift towards innovation and inclusivity.
Through systematic community engagement and a focus on nurturing leadership skills among the youth, the project aimed to fill the “children’s love tank” and provide a foundation of support and guidance that was often lacking in El Zonte. This holistic approach not only empowered the younger generation but also revitalized the community, offering a tangible alternative to the cycle of violence and despair that had once gripped the region.
