Argentina’s opposition parties have reignited an investigation into President Javier Milei’s involvement in the LIBRA scandal, following new corruption allegations that have rocked the government just before the upcoming elections in October.
The commission, initially established in April but stalled due to bureaucratic obstacles, was revived on Aug. 28 after leaked recordings implicated Milei and his sister Karina in a separate bribery scheme. The tapes, belonging to former presidential attorney Diego Spagnuolo, revealed claims of cash-for-favors transactions, which Spagnuolo later confirmed to be authentic.
The scandal has sparked public outrage, with protesters throwing lettuce and garbage at Milei during a public appearance, underscoring the growing unrest against the president’s administration. This fresh controversy has given the LIBRA investigation a new lease on life after losing momentum when Milei disbanded its initial task force in May.
The LIBRA scandal revolves around allegations of insider trading and a pump-and-dump scheme associated with the digital token, potentially involving high-ranking officials in Argentina. Maximiliano Ferraro, a legislator from the Civic Coalition ARI and the head of the revived investigative body, stated that the commission aims to determine if any wrongdoing occurred, specifically focusing on insider trading allegations.
Despite opposition from Milei’s allies, five opposition parties representing a significant number of lawmakers in the Chamber of Deputies voted to reopen the case. The commission has set a deadline of Nov. 10 for its findings, just weeks after the upcoming elections.
The investigation adds to the mounting challenges facing Milei as he grapples with a presidency already strained by economic challenges and growing dissatisfaction among the populace. The combination of corruption scandals and renewed investigations could have a significant impact on Milei’s political future.
While the LIBRA scandal has rattled Argentina’s crypto community, the broader allegations of bribery and abuse of power have resonated deeply with the public. With the elections looming, the outcome of the investigation and its political repercussions remain uncertain.
