Argentina’s opposition parties have reignited an investigation into President Javier Milei’s involvement in the LIBRA scandal, following new corruption allegations that have rocked the government just before the upcoming elections in October.
The commission, initially established in April but stalled due to bureaucratic obstacles, was revived on Aug. 28 after leaked recordings implicated Milei and his sister Karina in a separate bribery scheme. The tapes, belonging to former presidential attorney Diego Spagnuolo, revealed claims of cash-for-favors transactions, which Spagnuolo later confirmed to be authentic.
The scandal has sparked public outrage, with protesters throwing lettuce and garbage at Milei during a public appearance, underscoring the growing unrest against the president’s administration. This fresh controversy has given the LIBRA investigation a new lease on life after losing momentum when Milei disbanded its initial task force in May.
