BitBox has just unveiled the BitBox02 Nova, a cutting-edge hardware wallet designed for secure Bitcoin self-custody. This new device introduces native compatibility with iOS devices, addressing a long-standing limitation of the original BitBox02. Unlike its predecessor, the BitBox02 Nova does not require any software workarounds to function seamlessly with iPhones and iPads. Instead, BitBox developed new hardware to ensure native support for Apple devices.

One of the standout features of the BitBox02 Nova is its new Bluetooth communication system called Whisper. Whisper is a trust-minimized Bluetooth architecture that enhances security by physically isolating wireless communication on a separate microcontroller. This segregation ensures that Bluetooth function is logically separated from the core wallet firmware. Additionally, the main chip encrypts all outbound data before it reaches the Bluetooth stack and verifies all inbound communication cryptographically. To safeguard user privacy, the device identity remains private with randomized addresses that prevent tracking.
“Whisper silences potential attack vectors,” Bakkum stated. “It isolates Bluetooth function from the core system, ensures cryptographic integrity at every step, avoids remote tracking, and can be disabled by the user anytime.”
In terms of security, the BitBox02 Nova boasts an EAL6+ certified secure chip, reflecting a high standard for resistance to physical attacks. The device also features a new display and increased internal memory to accommodate future software updates and additional features.
The BitBox02 Nova is available in two versions. The first version exclusively supports Bitcoin and runs a minimal firmware configuration. The second version supports a selection of altcoins and includes functionality for universal two-factor authentication.
