Eager gamers who pre-ordered the SuiPlay0X1 handheld gaming device from Mysten Labs are facing a frustrating hurdle as unexpected import duties are causing headaches for many buyers. The latest crypto gaming handheld, which boasts a built-in crypto wallet for playing blockchain games on Sui, is being held up by import duties that could amount to hundreds of dollars for some customers.
Mysten Labs, in response to the complaints from buyers, has confirmed that they are holding the next shipment of devices as they work to address the issue of unexpected fees. The SuiPlay0X1 is a handheld gaming PC similar to Valve’s Steam Deck, with the added feature of supporting blockchain games on Sui. It also allows for playing games from popular storefronts like Steam and the Epic Games Store, thanks to its collaboration with gaming startup Playtron and the use of GameOS software.
The company initially produced 10,000 units of the gaming handheld for early adopters, pricing each device at $599. However, Mysten Labs stated that this price point was close to the cost of manufacturing each device, making it difficult for them to absorb the unexpected import duties for all buyers. The company emphasized that they do not receive any portion of the duty fees or taxes, as these are set by local and international governments for all cross-border purchases.
Buyers who have already received their SuiPlay0X1 units have reported varying import duty demands, with some facing fees as high as $348. Mysten Labs has acknowledged the discrepancy in fees and has advised affected buyers to reach out to their support team for assistance. They have also noted that residents of certain U.S. states are experiencing higher duties than others, and they are actively working to determine the differences in fees across regions.
As a result of the import duty issues, Mysten Labs has put a hold on shipping additional units of the SuiPlay0X1 until they can resolve the situation. While 2,000 units have already been sent out, the next batch of 3,000 units is currently on hold with plans to resume shipping by the end of August. Despite the delays and frustrations, some buyers have found humor in the situation, with one user joking about the “new Tariff-Drop model” on Sui.
Overall, the unexpected import duties on the SuiPlay0X1 have left many buyers feeling frustrated and misled about the total cost of the device. Mysten Labs is working to assist affected buyers and resolve the issue to ensure a smoother delivery process for future shipments.
