The Cyber Security Challenge Crowns Edinburgh Napier University Student as 2018 Champion
At the recent Cyber Security Challenge event, 19-year-old Charlie Hosier from Edinburgh Napier University emerged victorious as the 2018 champion. The announcement took place at a prestigious dinner event held in central London, marking the conclusion of the 2018 masterclass organized by Cyber Security Challenge. The intense three-day event, hosted at Barclays HQ, saw 42 talented contestants showcase their skills and expertise in the field of cybersecurity.
The Cryptofactor Challenge
This year’s highlight was the cryptofactor challenge, where participants were tasked with responding to a simulated cybersecurity attack. Acting as a security team responsible for safeguarding fintech and cryptocurrency clients, contestants were faced with the discovery of cryptomining malware and data theft from the organization’s sales portal. To make matters worse, cyber-criminals demanded a ransom for decrypting the stolen data. The challenge required teams to investigate, mitigate, and control the cyber-attack while devising an effective network design for enhanced protection in the future.
Competition Process
Prior to the masterclass, contestants underwent a rigorous qualifying process that included winning face-to-face competitions held throughout the year. The winning team, named My Doom, emerged victorious at the end of the three-day challenge.
Words from the Champion
Reflecting on his victory, Hosier expressed his gratitude for the incredible experience at the Cyber Security Challenge UK Masterclass. He mentioned how the challenges pushed him and his team to their limits while also forging valuable connections with fellow participants. Hosier’s win not only filled him with disbelief but also opened up new opportunities for a career in cybersecurity, which has been his dream.
CEO’s Perspective
Colin Lobley, the CEO of Cyber Security Challenge UK, emphasized the evolving role of cybersecurity professionals in today’s digital landscape. While technical skills remain crucial, Lobley highlighted the importance of softer skills such as psychology and communication. Effective communication of cybersecurity measures and procedures is now deemed essential for businesses and organizations. Lobley also praised Barclays for recognizing the significance of developing a diverse skill set among cybersecurity professionals in the UK.
