Eliza Labs Sues Elon Musk’s X for Allegedly Stealing AI Technology
Eliza Labs and its founder, Shaw Walters, have filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk’s X, claiming that the company deceived them into sharing technical details about their AI tools, only to then ban them from the platform and launch similar products.
Allegations of Unfair Business Practices
The lawsuit accuses X of unfairly leveraging its monopoly power to harm Eliza’s reputation, block its access to customers and investors, and profit from Eliza’s innovations. While Eliza Labs has not specified a monetary amount, they are seeking the return of any gains obtained by X through deception, compensation for losses incurred, as well as treble and punitive damages.
The Technology at Stake
Eliza Labs is the creator of ElizaOS, an open-source framework designed for building autonomous AI agents that can operate across blockchain networks.
The Alleged Deception
The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges that X invited Walters for a meeting in early 2025, shortly after Eliza’s tools gained popularity among developers. Following this meeting, X demanded a hefty monthly enterprise license fee from Eliza Labs, eventually suspending their accounts for violating terms and conditions.
Despite the suspension, X allegedly continued to request technical documentation from Eliza Labs under the guise of resolving the issue, only to later unveil similar AI agents under their xAI brand.
Legal Expert Opinion
Kelly Lawton-Abbott, a partner at law firm SSM, noted that the lawsuit presents a novel challenge in the AI industry, but faces significant hurdles due to the nature of Eliza’s open-source platform. She emphasized the high burden of proof required for federal antitrust claims.
Lawton-Abbott suggested that the lawsuit may serve as leverage for a potential settlement, given the power dynamic between the two companies.
X’s Response
X Corp. has not publicly commented on the allegations, but its AI tool, Grok, remains optimistic about the outcome of the case. The launch of “Companions” within the Grok chatbot app, featuring unique avatars like Ani and Rudy, suggests continued innovation despite the legal dispute.
“This case has intriguing hooks but faces uphill battles, especially against a platform like X with deep pockets and precedent-favoring defenses,” said a spokesperson for Grok.
