FIFA to Migrate FIFA Collect NFT Platform to Avalanche Blockchain
FIFA, the governing body of international soccer, is planning to migrate its FIFA Collect NFT collectibles platform to its own Avalanche Layer-1 blockchain.
Previous Platforms
FIFA Collect, which allows users to purchase and trade NFT-based soccer highlights, was previously launched on Algorand and also issued some collectibles on the Ethereum scaling network Polygon.
Migration to Avalanche
In April, FIFA Collect announced it would be leaving Algorand and migrating assets to a new FIFA-centric blockchain, which has now been confirmed to be powered by Avalanche.
Francesco Abbate, CEO of Modex and FIFA Collect, stated, “This move enhances our ability to deliver unique digital collectibles and immersive fan experiences, powered by the speed, scalability, and EVM compatibility of Avalanche. This ensures seamless integration with popular wallets, easier access, and a future-proof foundation for growth.”
Reasons for Migration
The decision to migrate from Algorand was based on factors such as performance, scalability, and customizability, according to Abbate.
Avalanche Infrastructure
John Nahas, Ava Labs Chief Business Officer, highlighted the benefits of Avalanche for FIFA, stating that it provides the infrastructure and scale for FIFA to leverage its global audience and expand with assets, applications, and use cases as they grow.
Broader Adoption of Blockchain
Nahas believes that FIFA’s migration to its own blockchain is a step towards broader adoption of blockchain technology in the sports industry, paving the way for new assets, applications, and use cases.
Future Plans
The migration of FIFA Collect is the first step in FIFA’s plans for its new blockchain. Future business cases are planned, though no specific details have been shared at this time.
Conclusion
With FIFA’s digital soccer collectibles platform moving to its own chain, the industry is witnessing a significant development towards real-world adoption of blockchain technology. This move by FIFA sets the stage for new opportunities and advancements in the sports collectibles space.
