Analysis Reveals Gaming-Related Malware Affects Over 380,000 Users
A recent report from Kaspersky has highlighted the alarming number of users who have encountered gaming-related malware and unwanted software in the past year. From July 01, 2021, through June 30, 2022, a total of 384,224 users fell victim to these malicious attacks, with 91,984 files distributed across 28 different games or series of games.
Key Findings of the Report
The report delved into the most prevalent and dangerous types of malware targeting gamers, including threats disguised as game cheats, miner attacks, and stealers. It identified the top five PC games or game series used as bait in these attacks: Minecraft, Roblox, Need for Speed, Grand Theft Auto, and Call of Duty.
One concerning trend noted in the report was a 13% increase in users attacked by programs designed to steal secrets compared to the previous year. Trojan-PSW was responsible for 77% of secret-stealing malware infections during this period.
When it comes to the types of threats faced by gamers, downloaders accounted for the majority (88.56%) of malicious and unwanted software, followed by adware (4.19%), Trojans (2.99%), and DangerousObject (0.86%).

To protect themselves from these threats, Kaspersky recommends that players utilize two-factor authentication (2FA), create unique and strong passwords, and only download games from official stores. With the gaming industry continuing to grow, it is crucial for gamers to remain vigilant and safeguard their accounts and personal information.
While Kaspersky’s report sheds light on the prevalence of gaming-related malware, it is not the only one to highlight this issue. A recent report from cybersecurity firm Akamai revealed a 167% increase in cyber-attacks targeting the gaming sector over the past year.
