Good News Day: Inspiring Positivity to Save Lives and Give Hope
Today, August 8, marks Good News Day, a global movement founded in 2018 by Media Queen Aldwyn Altuney. The initiative encourages people to share uplifting stories on social media, online platforms, and mainstream news in an effort to counter the constant stream of negative headlines and potentially save lives.
The inspiration behind Good News Day stems from a personal tragedy for Ms. Altuney, who lost her fourth friend to suicide by the age of 45. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, global suicide rates have reportedly quadrupled, emphasizing the importance of promoting positivity and hope in the face of adversity.
Ms. Altuney believes that the media plays a significant role in shaping people’s perceptions and emotions. When bombarded with negative news, it’s easy to lose hope and succumb to despair. Good News Day aims to shift the narrative and inspire individuals to embrace the positives in life once again.
Building on the success of Good News Day, Ms. Altuney launched the Global Good News Challenge in June 2020. This free monthly social media video challenge encourages participants to share gratitude, positive stories, and acts of kindness live online. The challenge can begin on any day of the month and runs for the duration of that month (e.g., eight days in August).
The premise of the Global Good News Challenge is simple: spread good news, kindness, and personal victories to create a ripple effect of positivity across the globe. Participants are reminded to share positivity, inspire others, focus on the good, and connect through kindness to foster a sense of community and well-being.
As Ms. Altuney aptly quotes Gandhi, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” By amplifying messages of hope and positivity, individuals can contribute to a happier, more connected world. Good News Day serves as a reminder that each of us has the power to make a difference through our words and actions.
