Vitalik Buterin’s Vision for Optimizing Layer1 Features for Layer2 Development
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is advocating for the optimization of Layer1 security and decentralization features to streamline the development of Layer2 solutions. In a recent post, Buterin discussed the importance of leveraging Ethereum’s Layer1 strengths to enhance the efficiency of Layer2 platforms.
Buterin emphasized the need for developers to embrace Ethereum’s Layer1 offerings instead of attempting to rebuild everything from scratch for Layer2 development. By utilizing Ethereum’s security, censorship resistance, proofs, and data availability features, Buterin believes that future Layer2 solutions can remain lightweight and robust.
According to Buterin, developers should focus on simplifying the logic of Layer2 platforms by primarily serving as sequencers and provers for transaction ordering and cryptographic proof generation. This approach aims to achieve a balance between trust minimization and efficiency, a goal that was previously elusive for enterprise blockchain projects in the past decade.

Buterin also highlighted the real-world benefits of incorporating Ethereum’s Layer1 features into Layer2 development. He cited examples where Ethereum’s Layer1 features have protected users’ rights in cases of issues on Layer2 platforms.
During the recent Ethereum Community Conference, Buterin raised concerns about the prevalence of fake decentralization in the crypto industry. He criticized projects that claim to be decentralized but rely on centralized components, likening them to “straw houses.” Buterin proposed tests, such as the “walkaway test,” to assess the security and decentralization of crypto applications.
