The Linea Association: Empowering Decentralization in the Ethereum Ecosystem
At Devcon in Bangkok, the Linea Association made a groundbreaking announcement regarding the development and governance of Linea’s open-source technology and ecosystem. The Swiss non-profit organization is dedicated to decentralizing the Linea Network, a zkEVM Layer-2 solution created to scale Ethereum. By the end of Q1 2025, the LINEA token will be launched, enabling community-driven governance.
The primary mission of the Linea Association is to support the growth of Linea Mainnet, aiming to establish a fast, affordable, and secure network that is accessible worldwide. Through the implementation of new governance mechanisms and decentralized sequencing and proving, the Association is committed to advancing decentralization. Empowering developers to build decentralized applications with enhanced user experiences and fostering strong, engaged communities are also key priorities.
Nicolas Liochon, the founder of Linea and a board member of the Linea Association, emphasized the importance of decentralization in Linea’s vision. He stated, “Linea must be owned and governed openly by all as a public good, just as Layer 1 Ethereum is.”
The governance structure of the Linea Association includes a Board of Directors, a General Assembly, an Executive Director, and a token governance body. The LINEA token will enable holders to participate in governance, with details on token design and utility to be revealed before the token generation event. With over 1.3 million verified addresses already part of the network, Linea’s focus on organic community growth is evident.
Since its mainnet launch in August 2023, Linea has processed over 230 million transactions, positioning it as one of the fastest-growing zkEVMs on Ethereum. The ecosystem has expanded to include over 420 ecosystem partners. The technology is publicly available under the Apache license, allowing users to view, fork, and modify the code.
Operating independently from Consensys, the Linea Association aligns with CEO Joseph Lubin’s vision of progressively decentralizing core innovations. Lubin expressed, “As Consensys progresses toward decentralization, Linea represents a foundational step in our vision of creating a Network State for the emerging decentralized global economy.”
By integrating long-term Ethereum contributors like Status, developers of the Nimbus client securing 10% of Ethereum’s proof-of-stake network, the Association plans to further decentralize core protocol development and governance. The Swiss Association structure enables token holders to have governance over managing IP and a treasury supporting Linea’s mission, with a continued focus on advancing the open-source LINEA technology and the Linea Network.
Linea’s goal is to empower users and businesses to manage valuable on-chain data, such as identity and property. The Linea Association aims to be a significant step toward decentralizing the network and fostering collaborative, transparent governance. The initiative seeks to empower the global community to shape the future of Linea and contribute to the broader Ethereum ecosystem.
