Michael Saylor Urges Tech Giants to Embrace Bitcoin Over Stock Buybacks
At Strategy World 2025, Michael Saylor delivered a powerful message to industry leaders like Microsoft: instead of engaging in stock buybacks, consider investing in Bitcoin.
Saylor emphasized, “Microsoft is planning a buyback. Opting to purchase Bitcoin would yield far greater returns than acquiring their own stock.” Supported by data, he argued that corporate treasuries are missing out on significant potential gains by adhering to traditional capital strategies.
Over the past five years, Microsoft stock has provided a commendable annual return of 18%. In contrast, Bitcoin has surged by 62% annually during the same period. Saylor highlighted, “If the benchmark cost of capital is the S&P 500 at 14%, Microsoft is surpassing it by 4%. On the other hand, Bitcoin is outperforming by an impressive 48%. Meanwhile, bonds have seen a decline of 5%, underperforming by 19%.”

Saylor contended that Bitcoin is not merely a high-performing asset but represents a fundamentally distinct asset class. He asserted, “It’s digital capital. Everything digital is superior. Digital images, relationships, messages, videos—all outshine their physical counterparts. Just ask Kodak or Polaroid.”
He drew a comparison between Bitcoin and a digital edifice—invisible, intangible, and everlasting. “All the drawbacks of a physical building vanish. It becomes invisible, indestructible, immortal, and transportable,” he explained.
Saylor advocated for companies like Microsoft, rooted in digital infrastructure, to transition to digital capital. “Microsoft should be fueled by digital capital,” he stated unequivocally.
Furthermore, he highlighted Bitcoin’s unique attribute as an uncorrelated asset. “By holding an asset on your balance sheet that’s not tied to everything else, you have the option to conduct stock buybacks, distribute dividends, or embrace the future,” Saylor remarked.
For Saylor, the path forward is crystal clear. Companies sitting on substantial cash reserves should consider the potential of Bitcoin—a decentralized, global, censorship-resistant asset boasting the strongest performance track record of the past decade.
“You need to identify an asset that remains impervious to competitors, nations, firms, creditors, currencies, or cultures. That asset is Bitcoin,” he asserted.
