Ripple Partners with Wormhole to Enhance XRPL with Multichain Support
Ripple has recently announced a partnership with Wormhole, a cross-chain messaging protocol, to bring multichain support to the XRP Ledger (XRPL) and its upcoming Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) sidechain. This collaboration aims to introduce advanced functionality to the XRPL, allowing assets and data to flow seamlessly between it and over 35 other blockchain networks.
The integration with Wormhole comes on the heels of several upgrades to the XRP Ledger, including the release of version 2.5.0 of its core software. These enhancements are designed to improve performance, strengthen support for institutional tools, and ensure regulatory compliance as blockchain adoption continues to grow.
Expanding XRPL’s capabilities is a key focus of this partnership. By integrating Wormhole, developers will have the ability to send XRP, IOUs, and new token types such as Multi-Purpose Tokens (MPTs) to other supported blockchains. Additionally, they can trigger smart contract functions on external networks using cross-chain data inputs.
David Schwartz, Ripple’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the importance of interoperability for XRPL’s evolution. He highlighted that creating bridges between chains allows the network to expand its reach while maintaining security and performance standards. This integration is expected to facilitate wider adoption by simplifying the movement of value across different networks.
Breaking down barriers between chains is crucial for enhancing the usability of blockchain infrastructure for institutions and application developers. The partnership with Wormhole will enable cross-chain messaging, token transfers, and the introduction of multichain digital assets, supporting emerging use cases in DeFi, institutional blockchain services, and tokenized real-world assets (RWAs).
Ripple’s strategic focus is on positioning XRPL as a flexible and secure alternative to leading networks like Ethereum and Solana, particularly for use cases involving smart contracts, tokenization, and cross-chain applications. By leveraging partnerships like Wormhole, Ripple aims to solidify XRPL’s position in the blockchain ecosystem and drive innovation in the decentralized finance space.
