Residents in Hood County are currently facing a dilemma as they strive to gain more control over a Bitcoin mining site that has been causing disruptions in their rural community. The mine, operated by Marathon Digital Holdings, has been in operation for three years near the unincorporated area of Mitchell Bend. However, neighbors have been complaining about the constant humming noise from the operation that has led to sleep disturbances, hearing issues, and a decrease in property values. Some residents even claim to have suffered from tinnitus and permanent hearing damage.
Efforts to incorporate Mitchell Bend as a town in order to regulate the mine through local ordinances were met with obstacles. County Judge Ron Massingill dismissed a petition drive due to not meeting the state requirement of 50 registered voters. However, residents submitted a second petition before the deadline in hopes of securing a spot on the November ballot. Shannon Wolf, a precinct chair with the local Republican Party, criticized the lack of notice from county officials regarding the rejection of the first petition and the resubmission deadline. If the second attempt is unsuccessful, residents are prepared to pursue legal action, potentially escalating the matter to the state’s highest court.
In addition to the incorporation efforts, some residents have joined lawsuits against Marathon for its operations in the state. Climate advocacy group Earthjustice has filed an injunction over alleged health and environmental concerns, while local residents have sought legal representation for claims of medical issues and lost property value. Cheryl Shadden, a vocal opponent of the mine, stated that lawsuits or incorporation are the only ways to have real leverage in the situation.
The incorporation of Mitchell Bend would grant the community the authority to establish its own regulations for industrial projects, providing a potential solution to the ongoing conflict. This case reflects a broader trend across Texas communities where crypto mining has encroached upon residential areas and farmland. As the residents of Hood County continue to fight for their rights and quality of life, the outcome of their efforts will have significant implications for the future of crypto mining in the state.
