Security Protocols Highlighted by CCO
Chief Communications Officer (CCO) Patrick Hillmann expressed his astonishment at the rigorous security protocols that new employees had to navigate during their onboarding process. Drawing from his experience leading a major cybersecurity team and handling significant data breaches in the past, Hillmann emphasized the constant barrage of cyber-attacks, phishing attempts, and scams that plague the crypto community.
He stated, “Now I understand why Binance goes to such great lengths in terms of security measures.”
Deepfake Impersonation Unveiled
Hillmann revealed that he had been the target of a deepfake impersonation, where a sophisticated hacking team used AI-based technology to create a fake persona based on his previous interviews and TV appearances.
He mentioned, “This deepfake was refined enough to deceive several astute members of the crypto community, despite the only noticeable difference being the absence of the 15 pounds I gained during COVID.”
New Form of Cybercrime Emerges
This incident marks one of the first reported instances of deepfake technology being utilized to impersonate an individual through video display. Previously, most attacks relied on audio manipulation to deceive their targets.
Earlier this year, the FBI issued a warning about scammers using deepfake audio in online collaboration meetings to trick participants into wiring money to external accounts.
