The US Authorities Solve a 10-Year-Old Mystery with Bitcoin Theft Guilty Plea
After a decade-long mystery, US authorities have finally claimed to have cracked the case involving the theft of 50,000 Bitcoin from the notorious dark web site Silk Road. The breakthrough came when James Zhong, a 32-year-old man, pleaded guilty to the crime.
The Seizure
In November 2021, officers raided Zhong’s home in Gainesville, Georgia, seizing just over 50,676 Bitcoin, valued at nearly $3.4 billion at the time. This marked the largest crypto seizure in the history of US law enforcement. Alongside the digital currency, investigators also confiscated $661,900 in cash, Zhong’s 80% interest in Memphis-based real estate business RE&D Investments, and various gold and silver bars.
The Crime
Zhong’s scam was relatively simple yet cunning. He took advantage of a bug in the Silk Road site’s escrow functionality, allowing him to withdraw funds multiple times in quick succession. Without listing any items for sale, Zhong deposited between 200 and 2000 Bitcoin across nine accounts and triggered over 140 transactions rapidly to release the stolen 50,000+ Bitcoin. He then attempted to launder the funds by transferring them to various addresses under his control.
The Aftermath
Five years after the initial theft, Zhong lucked out when Bitcoin underwent a hard fork, resulting in him gaining an additional 50,000 Bitcoin Cash, which he converted into 3,500 Bitcoin. This move ultimately led to his downfall.
The Resolution
US Attorney Damian Williams commended the efforts of law enforcement in tracking down the stolen funds, stating, “For almost ten years, the whereabouts of this massive chunk of missing Bitcoin had ballooned into an over $3.3 billion mystery. Thanks to state-of-the-art cryptocurrency tracing and good old-fashioned police work, law enforcement located and recovered this impressive cache of crime proceeds.”
The Consequences
As a result of his guilty plea, Zhong now faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for wire fraud dating back to 2012.
