Bitcoin’s recent surge in value has caught the attention of institutional giants, with both Japan’s Metaplanet and US-based Strategy making significant Bitcoin purchases. This move signals a growing confidence in the digital asset as a hedge against uncertain economic conditions.
Metaplanet announced that it had acquired 1,241 BTC for around $126.7 million on May 12, bringing their total Bitcoin holdings to 6,796 BTC. With Bitcoin trading above $104,000, the value of Metaplanet’s holdings now exceeds $708 million, resulting in an unrealized gain of over $100 million. This makes Metaplanet’s Bitcoin holdings larger than the official holdings of El Salvador, a nation known for its adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender.
CEO Simon Gerovich highlighted the firm’s strong conviction in Bitcoin, showcasing a year-to-date BTC Yield of 170%. He also mentioned a 38% yield between April 1 and May 12, demonstrating ongoing value creation for shareholders through the firm’s Bitcoin-focused treasury strategy.
On the other hand, Strategy, led by Bitcoin advocate Michael Saylor, disclosed that it purchased 13,390 BTC between May 5 and May 11 for $1.34 billion. This brought the company’s total Bitcoin holdings to 568,840 BTC, acquired at an average price of $69,287 per coin. With Bitcoin prices on the rise, Strategy’s Bitcoin stash is now valued at close to $60 billion, with paper profits exceeding $20 billion.
These significant purchases were funded through the sale of 3.2 million MSTR shares, raising $1.31 billion, and an additional $25.1 million from the sale of STRK preferred stock. Strategy mentioned that they still have the capacity to raise over $40 billion through these programs to finance further Bitcoin acquisitions.
Overall, the growing interest from institutional players like Metaplanet and Strategy reinforces Bitcoin’s status as a mainstream store of value. As more institutions continue to allocate funds into Bitcoin, the digital asset’s position as a reliable hedge against economic uncertainties is further solidified.
