Candy Crush Saga’s Glossy Take on Match-3 Puzzling Goes Crypto with Sugar Match
Candy Crush Saga, known for its glossy and streamlined approach to match-3 puzzling, has achieved over 1 billion mobile downloads. Now, the popular formula is getting a fresh crypto twist with the introduction of Sugar Match, a game built on the Tezos layer-2 network, Etherlink.
A New Twist on Match-3 Games
Sugar Match, developed by Sugar Gaming Studios for iOS and Android, sets itself apart from other match-3 games by offering a competitive player-versus-player (PvP) mode and the opportunity to earn crypto rewards based on skill.
A spokesperson for Sugar Match explained to Decrypt that the accessibility of match-3 games makes them appealing to millions of players transitioning from Web2 to Web3. Adding crypto elements enhances the player experience by providing lasting value through play-to-earn mechanics.
Play-to-Earn Mechanics
In Sugar Match, players can participate in PvP matches where three players compete in real-time puzzle races over five timed rounds. Each player pays an entry fee, and the winner takes home all the CNDY tokens. Additionally, players can earn tokens through seasonal tournaments, leaderboard competitions, and loyalty programs.
According to the spokesperson, this structure addresses sustainability concerns in Web3 games by rewarding players through fair competition rather than token inflation.
Choosing Tezos Layer-2
Sugar Gaming Studios raised $1 million to develop Sugar Match on Etherlink, a Tezos layer-2 network with Ethereum Virtual Machine compatibility. The decision to build on Tezos was based on factors such as speed, scalability, and low costs, as well as the supportive ecosystem and collaborative partnerships within the Tezos community.
Future Plans for Sugar Match
Following its recent launch on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, the focus for Sugar Match is on scaling up and introducing new features to keep the community engaged. The team aims to expand to five interconnected Web3 games and attract a million players to Sugar Match within the first six to 12 months.
