A Crypto Influencer Sentenced to Jail for Multi-Million Dollar Cryptojacking Scheme
A federal court in Brooklyn has recently sentenced a well-known crypto influencer, Charles Parks III, also known as CP30, to prison for orchestrating a large-scale cryptojacking scheme that defrauded cloud computing services of more than $3.5 million. The illegal operation involved the unauthorized use of computing resources to mine digital assets without permission.
Cryptojacking, commonly known as illegal crypto mining, involves hijacking resources such as electricity, hardware, or computing power to mine cryptocurrencies without the owner’s consent.
Parks was found guilty of defrauding two prominent cloud computing services by stealing resources worth over $1 million to mine various digital assets like Ethereum, Litecoin, and Monero. The scheme operated from January 2021 to August 2021, with Parks using fake identities, corporate affiliations, and deceptive practices to carry out the illegal activities.
The Deceptive Tactics Used by the Influencer
The crypto influencer created multiple fake identities, corporate entities, and email addresses to deceive cloud computing providers into granting him access to significant amounts of computing power and storage. He used domain names like “MultiMillionaire LLC” and “CP3O LLC” to mask his fraudulent activities and avoid detection.
Parks misled the providers by claiming to be establishing an online training company focused on media, technology, and business strategy, aiming to serve thousands of students simultaneously. However, there was no actual training company, and the resources were unlawfully used for cryptocurrency mining.
After obtaining the computing resources illegally, Parks converted the mined digital assets into cash through various platforms like crypto exchanges, NFT marketplaces, and traditional bank accounts. He used the proceeds to fund a lavish lifestyle, including luxury vehicles, travel expenses, and first-class accommodations.
Authorities Crack Down on Criminal Activities
Despite Parks’ attempts to flaunt his illicit gains on social media platforms, law enforcement agencies were able to apprehend him and bring him to justice. The US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York emphasized the commitment to dismantling cryptojacking operations that target legitimate businesses for nefarious purposes.
Parks pleaded guilty to wire fraud, money laundering, and engaging in unlawful monetary transactions related to the scheme. As part of his sentencing, he will surrender approximately $500,000 and a Mercedes-Benz luxury vehicle purchased with proceeds from his criminal activities. The exact amount of restitution will be determined in the future.
Overall, the case serves as a warning to individuals engaging in illegal crypto activities and highlights the importance of upholding the law in the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency landscape.
