Base Receives Strong Endorsement from Vitalik Buterin
Base, the EVM chain backed by Coinbase and positioned as Ethereum’s layer 2 solution, has recently garnered high praise from none other than Vitalik Buterin himself. In a rare show of support on social media, Vitalik commended Base as the proper way to scale Ethereum, offering users a faster experience through centralized sequencing while maintaining a connection to Ethereum’s security layer to ensure the safety of funds.
Vitalik emphasized that Base does not hold custody of funds, with withdrawals being guaranteed by the Ethereum mainnet code. The L2Beat stage 1 tag further solidifies user protection against rug pulls, distinguishing Base from mere marketing hype. He also dispelled the misconception that layer 2 solutions are merely servers, citing instances where censorship was thwarted and funds remained secure even in the absence of operators.
Furthermore, Base’s security council structure includes external members to prevent any one entity from exerting unilateral control.
Coinbase CEO Armstrong’s Response
Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, showed his support for Base by simply endorsing Vitalik’s statements with a brief comment: “Great thread to read through on Base.” This gesture underscores Coinbase’s full backing of Vitalik’s viewpoint.

Jesse Pollak from Base elaborated on how sequencers function, highlighting their role in bundling and ordering transactions. He emphasized that users can always bypass Base and interact directly with Ethereum if desired. Base is currently operating at stage-1 decentralization, with permissionless block proposals already in place and progress towards stage 2 underway.
Legitimacy of Base
The consensus emerging from Vitalik’s endorsement and Armstrong’s support is that Base is not a custodial sidechain or a disguised exchange. It stands as a trustworthy piece of Ethereum infrastructure designed to scale effectively. With Vitalik’s approval, Armstrong’s reinforcement, and the ongoing development progress, any doubts surrounding Base’s legitimacy seem to have been put to rest.
