Base, a leading Ethereum layer-2 network, recently made a significant announcement during its Base Camp event on Sept. 15. The platform officially disclosed its plans to explore the development of a native network token, signaling a potential breakthrough in Coinbase’s efforts to achieve global adoption.
During the event, Base founder Jesse Pollak unveiled the network’s vision to scale from tens of millions to billions of users worldwide. He emphasized three core principles that would guide the token exploration process: achieving complete decentralization, aligning builders and creators as economic participants, and pushing the boundaries of crypto to unlock new systems.
Pollak highlighted the importance of shaping and benefiting from the economy, stating, “The economy can only work if we’re the ones shaping it and benefiting from it.” He also underscored the significance of aligning creators and developers through tokenization.
Currently operating as a stage one rollup, Base consists of a decentralized fraud or proof submission system and a security council. However, the platform is not fully decentralized and requires additional work to achieve complete decentralization in stage two. The potential token is seen as a mechanism to expedite this transition while incentivizing ecosystem participation.
Coinbase co-founder and CEO Brian Armstrong confirmed the token development, noting its potential to accelerate decentralization and foster growth within the ecosystem. However, Armstrong made it clear that no concrete plans have been established yet, describing the announcement as a philosophical update as the team explores various possibilities.
Pollak outlined three key commitments regarding token development. Base is committed to building on Ethereum, rejecting any speculation about alternative blockchain foundations. The team also pledges to collaborate with regulators and legislators to ensure compliance, drawing on Coinbase’s extensive track record in this area. Additionally, Base is dedicated to transparent development, engaging with the community and seeking feedback throughout the process.
The decision to embrace transparency over secretive development reflects Base’s commitment to open collaboration and community involvement. Pollak stressed the importance of gathering community input during the two-day Base Camp event to inform token development in alignment with the network’s values.
Describing the announcement as a “new day one” opportunity, Pollak emphasized the potential of tokenization in building a global economy. The exploration phase has commenced without specific timelines or implementation details, as Base prioritizes community consultation and regulatory compliance in advancing the token development.
As Base embarks on this exciting journey of token exploration, the platform remains focused on its core values of decentralization, collaboration, and transparency. Stay tuned for further updates on this groundbreaking initiative.
