Google Takes Legal Action Against Blockchain-Based Botnet
Google has recently made headlines by filing what is believed to be the first lawsuit against a blockchain-based botnet. The tech giant is aiming to increase pressure on the likely Russian administrators behind the Glupteba botnet.
The Glupteba Botnet
Comprised of approximately one million compromised Windows PCs worldwide, the Glupteba botnet is a powerful tool used by cybercriminals. These malicious actors utilize the botnet to steal credentials and data, mine for cryptocurrency, and hide the location of their attacks using proxies.
The distribution of the Glupteba malware occurs through pay per install (PPI) networks and via traffic purchased from traffic distribution systems (TDS).
Google’s Action
In response to the threat posed by the Glupteba botnet, Google has taken action to disrupt its command-and-control infrastructure. However, the decentralized nature of blockchain technology presents a challenge, as it allows threat actors to quickly recover from disruptions.
As a result, Google has decided to pursue legal action against the operators of the botnet in an effort to impede their activities and protect unsuspecting users. The litigation, filed in the Southern District of New York, includes charges of computer fraud and abuse, trademark infringement, and other claims.
Google’s VP of security, Royal Hansen, and general counsel, Halimah DeLaine Prado, expressed confidence that legal action will create real liability for the operators of the botnet.
Future Implications
While Google’s legal action may pose challenges for the operators of the Glupteba botnet, the effectiveness of such measures remains to be seen, especially if the threat actors are based in Russia.
Google continues to work on enhancing its strategies to combat blockchain-based botnets and protect users from cyber threats.
