The Growing Disconnect Between Cryptocurrency Skills and Cybersecurity
Cryptocurrency Skills in High Demand
The demand for cryptocurrency skills has seen an exponential rise of over 1000% in the past two years, according to a recent report by Trend Micro. The analysis of data from ITJobsWatch has revealed that in the UK alone, the demand for cryptocurrency skills has surged by 1130% since 2016.
Despite this significant increase in demand, there seems to be a glaring disconnect between cybersecurity and the fast-emerging cryptocurrency sector. While blockchain, finance, Java, bitcoin, and JavaScript top the list of skills associated with cryptocurrency roles, cybersecurity does not even make it to the top 30.
The Security/Crypto Skills Gap
This gap in cybersecurity knowledge leaves cryptocurrency exchanges vulnerable to cyber-attacks, as highlighted by Bharat Mistry, Trend Micro’s principal security strategist. Mistry emphasizes that with greater awareness of cryptocurrency and its associated risks, cybersecurity professionals could better secure these platforms and reduce the attack surface for crypto exchanges.
Recent cyber-attacks on cryptocurrency exchanges, such as the $60 million raid on Zaif, $31 million theft at Bithumb, and the $500 million attack on Coincheck, underscore the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures in the industry.
The Rising Threat of Cryptojacking
In addition to external threats, the report from Trend Micro also warns about the growing menace of cryptojacking. The detection of cryptojacking malware has seen a staggering 956% increase between the first half of 2017 and the first half of 2018. This form of cyber-attack involves the unauthorized use of a computer’s resources to mine cryptocurrency without the user’s consent.
Addressing the Global Cybersecurity Skills Shortage
The global cybersecurity skills shortage is a pressing issue, with the latest data indicating a shortfall of almost three million professionals. Bridging the gap between cybersecurity expertise and the cryptocurrency sector is crucial in mitigating the risks posed by cyber-attacks and safeguarding digital assets.
By investing in cybersecurity education and training programs that specifically address the unique challenges of the cryptocurrency industry, organizations can better protect themselves against evolving cyber threats and ensure the safe and secure adoption of blockchain technology.
