South Korean actress and former singer Hwang Jung-eum is facing a potential three-year prison sentence after prosecutors accused her of embezzling company funds to invest in cryptocurrency. The star, known for her roles in popular dramas such as “High Kick Through The Roof” and “Kill Me, Heal Me,” admitted to using 4.3 billion won ($3.1 million) belonging to her entertainment agency to purchase cryptoassets in 2022.
According to reports, Hwang also took out an 800 million won ($571,866) loan in July 2022 under her company’s name. Prosecutors alleged that she transferred most of these funds to her personal bank account, subsequently using the money to buy cryptocurrencies. They presented evidence of multiple transactions throughout the year where company funds were used to acquire digital coins. Additionally, Hwang was accused of using company money to cover personal expenses such as property levies and local taxes.
In her defense, Hwang’s legal team stated that she had sold off her real estate assets to repay the company. They argued that the actress was influenced by those around her to make crypto investments in hopes of benefitting the company. Despite acknowledging her poor judgment, Hwang expressed remorse for her actions and claimed to have reflected on her wrongdoing.
The court is expected to reconvene in late September to determine Hwang’s sentencing. Her defense team emphasized that the company in question was a one-person agency solely owned by the actress, highlighting her immaturity in managing its finances. They assured the court that she was deeply reflecting on her mistakes.
The case has garnered significant attention in South Korea, with many following the trial closely. Hwang’s involvement in cryptocurrency investments has sparked debate over financial responsibility and the consequences of misusing company funds. As the legal proceedings continue, the entertainment industry awaits the outcome of this high-profile case.
The original charges against Hwang Jung-eum have raised concerns about the intersection of celebrity status and financial misconduct. The actress’s actions serve as a cautionary tale for those in the public eye, highlighting the importance of ethical financial practices in the entertainment industry.
